Today in History S4 E11: January 2, 1777 A.D. The Battle of Assunpink Creek
On January 2, 1777 A.D. U.S. Continental Army led by General George Washington defeated the Hessian and British soldiers at the Battle of Assunpink Creek. This conflict was also known as the Second Battle of Trenton due to Washington and his army coming back across the Delaware River to defend the town against the British Army led by Lord Cornwallis. Washington wanted to make a stand against the British and fought them at Assunpink Creek which was located south of the town of Trenton. The fighting lasted several hours until the British and Hessian soldiers chased after the American soldiers who were retreating after their outer defensive line located near 5 Mile Run and Stockton Hollow was overrun.
Washington who had 5,000 soldiers lined up behind earthworks along Assunpink Creek and 40 cannons fired upon the British and Hessian soldiers who tried to cross the bridge which went over the creek and into Trenton. They inflicted over 300 casualties upon the British and Hessians which prompted their Generals to delay their attack upon Washington's position until the next day. But by sunrise all of his soldiers retreated towards Princeton and hostilities between the two sides would commence once again.
