Imagine hosting a special event in a massive, awe-inspiring cave located in the historic region of Maresha and Beit Guvrin. Forget the idea of a cramped, dark, and damp space. The Bell Cave at Beit Guvrin defies expectations with its tall, airy interior, over 60 feet high, and walls of soft beige limestone. Accessible and spacious, this cave provides a one-of-a-kind setting for celebrations. Among the hundreds of bell-shaped caves in the area, only one is used for events.
These caves are part of an intricate network, with some connected by passageways linking groups of 40-50 caves. While most caves require crawling or rappelling to access, the event cave is easy to reach. These caves, about 800 in total, were originally quarried to provide building materials for nearby cities. Quarrying was done through a hole at the top of the cave, a feature still visible today.
Beit Guvrin succeeded the ancient city of Maresha, mentioned in the Bible (Joshua 15:44 and 2 Chronicles 11:5-8). Fortified by King Rehoboam, Maresha was conquered in 112 BCE by Hasmonean King John Hyrcanus I, who destroyed the city. Although partially rebuilt, it was ultimately destroyed again in 40 BCE.
During the Roman and Byzantine periods, Beit Guvrin flourished as a major city and was granted the title "city of freemen," named Eleutheropolis. It thrived until the Bar Kokhba revolt (132-135 CE). Archaeological discoveries here include a large Jewish cemetery, a Roman amphitheater, public baths, mosaics, and burial tombs. The remains of St. Anne’s Church highlight its significance as a Christian center in later periods.
Beit Guvrin National Park offers visitors an opportunity to explore this fascinating history. Among the highlights are Tel Maresha, an ancient urban center that has been rebuilt many times over the centuries, and countless caves, each with its own story.
Located along Route 35 near Kibbutz Beit Guvrin, the park is about 35 miles (56 kilometers) south of Jerusalem, at an elevation of 820-1,150 feet above sea level. This site seamlessly blends natural beauty and historical significance, making it an unforgettable destination.
