Harpers Ferry Raid (October 1859):
Brown led a group of 21 men—including Black and white abolitionists—in an assault on the federal armory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia). He intended to seize weapons, rally enslaved people, and spark a widespread uprising. The plan failed; the raid was quickly suppressed by U.S. Marines led by Colonel Robert E. Lee. Brown was captured, tried, and sentenced to death.
