How to Apply Eye Ointment to a Cat
In this video, we'll show you how to properly administer eye drops to a cat. This is necessary for treating conjunctival inflammation, corneal ulcers, and mechanical eye injuries. This procedure is most often performed on kittens with infectious conjunctivitis caused by the herpes virus, chlamydia, and calicivirus.
It's best to administer eye drops to a cat with an assistant, who can help keep the animal still. Next, pull back the cat's eyelid and carefully inject the appropriate dose of medication into the resulting pocket. If the eye drops are ointment, gently massage the cat's eye after closing the eyelid. If the drops are drops, nothing further is required; the medication will spread over the surface of the eyeball on its own.
If you're dealing with a severe case of inflammation, with exudate that dries and forms crusts, before administering eye drops, use a cotton swab soaked in saline to clean the entire area around the eye and remove any discharge.
