Who are the Afrikaners?

South Africa is home to nearly 4 million Afrikaners. Literally, "Africans." They are the descendants of European colonists—Dutch, German, and French settlers—who arrived in South Africa in the 17th and 18th centuries. They are Protestant, speak Afrikaans, and historically were farmers. Within the Afrikaners, there is a subgroup called the Boers, who gained worldwide fame thanks to the Anglo-Boer Wars. They never called themselves Boers; the British gave them that name. Essentially, a Boer is a peasant, a farmer. Their history began in April 1652, when the leader of the Dutch East India Company expedition, Jan van Riebeeck, and the crew of three ships sailed to the Cape of Good Hope.
