Con la grande Lyda Borelli in un film muto del 1917... omaggiata apertamente...
Silent movie star Lyda Borelli often interpreted characters defeated by diabolical destinies who ended up killing themselves (often with poison – she died in 8 out of 14 films, and Donna Lucrezia Borgia is an alluringly melodramatic character...) Horror show thrills did not originate in Hollywood -- in fact, the "dream" or "nightmare factory" of movie production was anticipated in its most lurid artifacts by nineteenth century opera.
The grand manner of singing (and acting) is very a simply a grand manner. In the early 20th Century there were very few who dared to challenge Lucrezia Borgia; among the successful were the Italian sopranos: Celestina Boninsegna, Maria de Macchi, and Ines de Frate. Their reputations as famous Lucrezias survive. To round out the list of the Century's famous Lucrezias, we can add Giannina Arangi Lombardi, Montserrat Caballe and Joan Sutherland, each of whom can be counted among the most lauded sopranos of all time.
