Demonology: Asmodeus - The Spirit of Jealousy, Passion and Destruction

Today in this video, we will explore one of the most feared and forbidden names in demonology—Asmodeus, the king of darkness, the spirit of destruction, and the ruler of passions. He was known to the priests of Persia, feared by rabbis, and invoked by magicians in the Middle Ages. This is the demon who, according to legend, participated in the construction of the Temple of Jerusalem and then deprived King Solomon of his power and throne. Asmodeus is more than just a figure of ancient legend; he is the embodiment of horror, darkness, and forbidden knowledge.
In demonological treatises, he is called the greatest king of hell, ruling over 72 legions of spirits. In Johann Weyer's Pseudomonarchia Demoniaca, he is called Sidonai. In The Lesser Key of Solomon, he is described as one of the most dangerous spirits, possessing three heads—a bull's, a human's, and a ram's. His body is adorned with a serpent's tail, his breath spews flames, and his feet are webbed like those of monstrous birds. Asmodeus rides a hellish dragon and holds a spear and banner, like a true lord of darkness. His image combines horror, majesty, and temptation.
Dark Power and Dangerous Gifts
Asmodeus has always been considered not only a destroyer but also a teacher. He bestows knowledge of arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, and crafts. He reveals secret treasures and bestows a ring of power. But at the same time, he brings madness, lust, and decay. His curse falls upon newlyweds, turning love into hate, beauty into ugliness, and joy into a curse. In legends, he himself admits: "My business is to destroy unions and break hearts." The Jewish Book of Tobit recounts how Asmodeus killed seven of Sarah's suitors on their wedding night, until the Archangel Raphael banished him with the smoking incense of a fish. But even banishment did not destroy his power.
Asmodeus and Solomon
The most terrifying and at the same time astonishing story concerns King Solomon. Initially, Asmodeus was forced to help build the Temple, discovering the secret of the Shamir worm, which could cut stone. But Solomon's pride became his downfall: by giving his magic ring to a demon, he lost his throne and power. Asmodeus transformed into a giant, took his place, and ruled Jerusalem. This legend lives on in Jewish, Christian, and Muslim traditions, becoming a symbol of the dangers of trusting in forces beyond human understanding.
Asmodeus in Culture and Magic
From Persia to Europe, his image has remained omnipresent. In the Middle Ages, he was invoked at black masses, worshiped in secret orders, and associated with orgies, gambling, and witchcraft. In 17th-century France, an outbreak of demonic possession among nuns in Aix-en-Provence and Loudun was attributed to Asmodeus. In demonological treatises, he is portrayed as the prince of debauchery and the enemy of John the Baptist. His cult even left its mark in Egypt, where temples to him were erected in the form of a serpent.
Asmodeus is a symbol of temptation, degradation, and hidden knowledge. He is the demon of jealousy, passion, and destruction. His presence is felt in the history of magic, in exorcisms, and in cursed texts that still carry a chill.
