The CX-50 is Mazda’s compact SUV and doesn’t have the easiest job on earth, as it competes with the segment leaders, such as the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V or the Kia Sportage, so we’re talking about some serious players here. It’s been designed with an emphasis on “active and outdoor lifestyles”, and you can tell that right away by looking at it.
The Meridian Edition that we have today has even more outdoorsy vibe with a hood graphic, 18-inch rims wrapped in all-terrain tires, and bit of garnish on the headlights and the rocker panels. If that’s not enough for you, the Apex package will give you splash guards, crossbars, and a roof platform.
The CX-50 sits on Mazda’s Skyactive front wheel drive platform, meaning it has strut front suspension up front, and a torsion beam in the back combined with regular, passive dampers. As of powertrain, we have three choices: a 187 hp naturally aspirated 4-cylinder, 256 hp turbocharged 4-cylinder, or a 219 hp hybrid, using Toyota's hybrid system that you can find in the RAV4.
