The Dungans are a small ethnic group living primarily in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. The majority of the Dungans (approximately 14 million) live in China, where they are known as the Hui or Huizi. In our countries, this people is renowned for their hard work, respect for their traditions, and excellent cuisine, without which we can hardly imagine life. At the same time, the Dungans are quite reserved, speaking a dialect of Chinese, but practicing Islam. Having lived alongside them for many decades, it turns out we have only a superficial knowledge of the history of their ethnic group. And it is very interesting and has a number of surprising twists.
