In the 1980s, a chilling series of eleven child murders gripped Switzerland. There was immense relief when, at the end of August 1989, Werner Ferrari, the suspected perpetrator, was finally apprehended. The laborer confessed to four murders—but recanted at the start of his trial. Based on circumstantial evidence, he was sentenced in 1995 to life imprisonment for five counts of murder. Meanwhile, evidence from new forensic investigations cast doubt on Ferrari's guilt in the Ruth Steinmann case—the murder he had always denied. The retrial took place in mid-April 2007 before the Baden District Court.
