Oregon is a love song for Joel (my partner and the father of my child) who features heavily in this video. There is even footage from when he was a kid growing up in Oregon in the 90's with a bad/beautiful bowl cut!
The video was edited by Jeremy Hoffman (Joel's brother) and features Joel's entire family except his mum who seemed to be on filming duties.
I wrote 'Oregon' on the way to meet Joel’s family for the first time (in Oregon). I stopped in at Tony Buchen’s studio in LA back in 2019. He had a friend called Justin Stanley with him who I didn’t know at the time. As fortune would have it they are both stupidly talented freaks of music who have wonderful and intimidating discographies (Noiseworks, Prince, Nicka Costa, Paul McCartney, Montaigne and many more)!
‘Oregon’ started with a 70’s piano riff and ended with some big David Byrne-esque vocals.
It was a really fun session! We wrote and recorded the whole thing in a day.
Tony brought his incredible bass and synth playing, production prowess and arrangement mastery as well as backing vocals and other ideas too numerous to mention. Justin provided the drum part which in turn organically built the bridge section and much more. It was one of those creative sessions that you walk away from completely electrified.
