What's the essential functionality offered by blockchains? (Answer: a general-purpose computer that is open-access, has no owner or operator, and supports property rights for user-owned data.) How is that functionality implemented? (Answer: a lot of super-cool computer science!) Why is that functionality useful? (Answer: this is a little like asking someone from 1996 (or maybe 1983) to speculate on the killer apps of the Internet.)
