(2) Jesus was born to bring many sons to glory, tasting death for all.
Jesus came to bring sons and daughters to glory, tasting death for all. He came to recover and restore the glory and honor of being a human being according to the Word of God. Sin had destroyed that glory. But Jesus restores it for us.
Hebrews makes this point by quoting Psalm 8. That psalm of David tells us that God created human beings to have glory and honor, even though for a time human beings were made a little lower than the angels (Heb 2:7). But his end is to put all things under his feet (Heb 2:8).
Here lies the practical problem, since verse 8 says, "We do not yet see all things put under him." Psalm 8 says that all things are to be put under our feet. But we don't see that happening. This means, for Hebrews, that this subjection must refer to the world to come. And this world to come is centered on Jesus. Look at verse 9:
"But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, Jesus, crowned with glory and honor for the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone" (Heb 2:9).
In the incarnation, Jesus was made lower than the angels, arguably for a short time. But on the cross, he was crowned with glory and honor, because he tasted death for everyone. As a result, verse 10 says, Jesus is bringing "many sons to glory" (Heb 2:10).
Jesus was born to bring us back to glory through the cross. And that is a cause for incredible praise. We fail to grasp the magnitude of the reality of those words. May God give us eyes to see and marvel at that reality today.
