Odin was interpreted at least at times as Mercury in the Roman period and Tacitus names him as the chief god of the Germans. Yet the same thing is said of Mercury among the Celts. Is there a connection between the Germanic Mercury, Odin, and the Celtic Mercury, Lugus? I investigate this question using archaeology, Roman sources and surviving Norse and Celtic mythology.
