Mesomeric Effect and its types | L-01 | EG Chemistry - IIT JEE & NEET
The mesomeric effect is the polarity created in a molecule or conjugated system by electron movement towards or away from a substituent group. It is broadly divided into two categories:
1. +M effect: Positive mesomeric effect
2. -M effect: Negative mesomeric effect
The mesomeric effect can be described as the movement of pi bonds towards the same or more electronegative elements.
The mesomeric effect is positive (+M) when the substituent is an electron-releasing group. The mesomeric effect is negative (-M) when the substituent is an electron-withdrawing group
