The story takes place in the year 31 BC, near Actium in Greece. Rome is in the midst of a power struggle after the death of Julius Caesar, and civil division divides the Roman people. Octavian, Caesar's nephew, persuades the Roman Senate to declare war on Mark Antony, his political and military rival, as well as on Queen Cleopatra. Octave's naval force under the command of the
General Agrippa triumphs over the fleet
Egyptian. Cleopatra and her ally Marc Antony
