The 2022 FIFA World Cup (English: 2022 FIFA World Cup; Arabic: 2022 كس العالم لكرة القدم, Kaʾs al-ʿālam li-kurat al-qadam 2022) is the 22nd FIFA World Cup, the FIFA men's national football tournament held every four years. This edition will be held in Qatar from November 20 to December 18, 2022. It will be the first FIFA World Cup to be held in the Arab and Muslim world, and the second to be held in Asia, following the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan. It will also be the last FIFA World Cup to feature 32 teams, as the tournament will be expanded to 48 in 2026. France is the reigning champion. Due to Qatar's hot summer weather, this edition will be held from late November to mid-December, making it the first time it will not be held in mid-year. The tournament's timeframe was reduced to 29 days.
Allegations of corruption surrounding Qatar's hosting rights were raised. An internal investigation and FIFA report exonerated Qatar of any wrongdoing, but Michel J. García, the chief investigator, described FIFA's report on his investigation as containing "numerous incomplete and erroneous representations." On May 27, 2015, the Swiss Federal Prosecutor General opened an investigation into corruption and money laundering related to the bids for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. On August 6, 2018, former FIFA President Sepp Blatter claimed Qatar used "blackmail," alleging that the bid committee rigged the bidding process to secure the hosting rights. Qatar also faced heavy criticism for its treatment of migrant workers involved in the tournament preparations. Amnesty International stated that forced labor was involved, and that hundreds, if not thousands, of migrant workers had died as a result of human rights violations and negligent and inhumane working conditions.
