A Minecraft Movie is an upcoming American adventure film inspired by the 2011 video game Minecraft, developed by Mojang Studios. Directed by Jared Hess, with a screenplay by Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer, the film features Jason Momoa and Jack Black, alongside Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge. The movie is a co-production between Legendary Pictures, Mojang, and Vertigo Entertainment and will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
The idea for a Minecraft film adaptation was first announced in February 2014 when Markus Persson, the creator of Minecraft, revealed that Mojang was in discussions with Warner Bros. to bring the project to life. Producers Roy Lee and Jill Messick were involved from the beginning. Throughout the development process, several filmmakers, including Shawn Levy and Rob McElhenney, were considered for the director's chair, while writers such as Kieran and Michele Mulroney, Jason Fuchs, and Aaron and Adam Nee contributed to the script. In 2019, Peter Sollett was hired to write and direct the film, with Allison Schroeder co-writing, but both eventually departed the project in 2022. Jared Hess then took over as director, with Jason Momoa in talks for a leading role. Additional casting took place from May 2023 to January 2024, with filming commencing later that month in New Zealand and wrapping up by mid-April 2024. The official teaser trailer was released on September 4, 2024.
A Minecraft Movie is set to hit theaters in the United States on April 4, 2025.
