The island is bare,
And my shipmates have fled,
And my only companion
Is gone to the dead;
Pray, why do you love me,
Say, what can I do?
I beg you, my Circe,
Let me go, let me go.

The silence is gentle,
The waves on my feet
Are lush like the feelings
Of glorious defeat,
And the birds of the sunset
Swallow and play;
I beg you, my Circe,
Let me stay, let me stay.

The world is your kingdom,
The grass and the sand,
The air, and the fire,
Belong in your hand;
As thought and desire
Are breeding in me,
I beg you, my Circe
Let me be, let me be.
