EHD, Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease, is a general term for illnesses caused by two different viruses that are related; EHD and blue tongue , or BT. They are the most common diseases found in deer and can cause significant mortality events. It is a virus caused by a gnat that enters the nostrils. EHD is most common in dry years. Deer concentrating around ponds often get the disease. It is fatal. A few years ago the Milk River region in Montana lost 80% of its deer population to EHD.
