Title: The geometric exegesis of the Dirac algorithm.

Abstract: I will review the geometrical interpretation of the Dirac algorithm for constrained dynamical systems and field theories. Although the justification of the method proposed by Dirac to find the Hamiltonian formulation for singular systems is clear from a dynamical point of view, a geometric perspective is also very helpful, especially when dealing with field theories defined in bounded spatial regions. As we will show, by recasting Dirac’s “algorithm” in a geometric form it is possible to avoid the direct computation of Poisson brackets and solve a number of subtle issues related with the inversion of the symplectic form.
