Mycobacterium (Part 2) - Veterinary Bacteriology and Myology
In this lecture, we discuss the Mycobacterium including M. tuberculosis the agent of TB. This genus was discovered by Robert Koch (of Koch's postulates fame!) in 1882 and is therefore a key player in the development of microbiology as a discipline in addition to it's medical importance. Other related species cause zoonotic diseases in a variety of domestic and wild animal species. Other species of Mycobacterium, including the avium complex and those which cause leprosy are also of importance to human and veterinary medicine. I'll cover the basic microbiological characteristics, taxonomy, virulence factors, common clinical presentations, sample collection and diagnostic strategies, zoonotic potential and treatment options for these organisms.
