Comuna 13 is one of Medellín’s most famous neighborhoods. It was originally a poor, marginalized area on the city’s steep hills. During the 1980s and 1990s, it became known for extreme violence due to conflicts between drug cartels, paramilitary groups, and guerrillas. At one point, it was considered one of the most dangerous places in the world.

Starting in the early 2000s, Medellín’s city government and local communities began initiatives to reclaim the area. This included public escalators, improved infrastructure, schools, community centers, and a focus on arts and culture. Street art, music, and hip-hop became central to the neighborhood’s identity, turning Comuna 13 into a symbol of resilience, transformation, and creative expression. Today, it’s a popular destination for tourists who want to see its colorful murals, listen to local music, and experience its unique street culture.
