Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany has won the most number of votes in the eastern state of Thuringia.
It has come in second place in neighbouring Saxony in state elections that will have long term ramifications on German politics.
The election results are a big setback for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his coalition government that hasn't figured in the top three in terms of votes polled.
AfD is anti-immigrant and Russia-friendly. Germany will see federal elections next September and the surge of anti-establishment parties will spell trouble for the ruling coalition.
With most parties not keen to ally with AfD, government formation in these states could take weeks.
