Day of the Dead Altar 2020: Virtual tour
The Mexican Cultural Institute (MCI) announces its 2020 Day of the Dead celebration including an all virtual experience called: “The Journey through the Mictlán” (the Mictlán is the Aztec underworld). Parts of the Institute will be decorated to emulate each of the nine levels of the underworld. Viewers will get a glimpse of what each level represents, according to Aztec mythology. Each level will have a curated description on its meaning and symbolism, and its relevance to the celebration of Day of the Dead.
To go along with the virtual tour, the MCI has pre-select a number of families to participate in its community engagement, “Los míos, los tuyos y los nuestros.” The pre-selected families had the opportunity to collectively create one community altar for their loved ones with items from their homes. The purpose of this activity is to continue to build on the already existing tradition that has crossed borders from Mexico into the United States.
The altar was created by Catrinas Corazón and the resident artists Enrique Quiroz and Arturo Castañeda, and will be on display at the Institute until November 21, 2020, which means that guests can still book an appointment for a virtual tour only offered every Tuesday and Thursday at 11:30 AM until November 21, 2020.
