Civil Defense Test Alarm 2024 / Siren Test Austria - Announcement (05.10.24)
On Saturday, October 5, 2024, a nationwide civil defense test alarm will be conducted again. Between 12:00 and 12:45 p.m., after the "siren test" signal, the three civil defense signals "Warning," "Alarm," and "All Clear" will be broadcast throughout Austria.
The test alarm serves, on the one hand, to test the technical equipment of the warning and alarm system, and, on the other, to familiarize the population with these signals and their meaning. The media will provide continuous information during the test.
Austria has a well-developed warning and alarm system, operated by the Federal Ministry of the Interior together with the state government offices and the state fire brigade associations. Austria is thus one of the few countries capable of broadcasting a nationwide siren warning via more than 8,200 civil defense sirens.
Depending on the danger situation, the signals can be triggered centrally by the Federal Warning Center in the Operations and Crisis Coordination Center of the Federal Ministry of the Interior, by the state warning centers of the individual federal states, by the district warning centers, or directly on site.

🟡 Warning
Signal: Steady continuous tone - 3 min.
Meaning: Approaching danger
What to do?: Turn on the radio, TV, and warning app
🔴 Alarm
Signal: Increasing and decreasing siren tone - 1 min.
Meaning: Acute danger to the public
What to do?: Go to enclosed areas, turn on the radio and warning app
🟢 All clear
Signal: Steady continuous tone - 1 min.
Meaning: End of danger
What to do?: Protective measures can be lifted
🟠 Fire
Signal: Steady continuous tone, interrupted twice - 1 min.
Meaning: Alerting the fire department
What to do?: No significance for the public
🟣 Test
Signal: Short sequence - 15 sec.
Meaning: Function test The siren
What should be done?: No action is required.
