The Constituent Assembly of India was a body of elected representatives responsible for drafting the Constitution of India. It was constituted on December 9, 1946 and consisted of elected members from provinces and princely states of British India. The Assembly held its first meeting on December 13, 1946 and its last meeting on August 24, 1947. The Constitution of India was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 26th November, 1949 and came into effect on 26th January, 1950. The Assembly consisted of 389 members, with the majority being from the Indian National Congress. Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, the main architect of the Indian Constitution, was the Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Constituent Assembly. The Constituent Assembly is considered as one of the most important events in the history of India, as it marked the transition of India from colonial rule to a democratic republic.
