The film is based on declassified materials from the Central Archives of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR). Operational reports from the Polish General Staff reveal how Warsaw's special intelligence service worked against the USSR for nearly 20 years... A whole plan, beautifully titled "Prometheus," was developed for this purpose.

Just as Prometheus brought fire to mortals, so the Poles supposedly brought light to the dark, ignorant outskirts of the former Tsarist Russia. The goal was the same: to tear our country, Poland's eternal antithesis, into dozens of fragments with the help of nationalist separatists. The core of the "Prometheus" project was émigrés from Russia, Ukraine, the Volga region, Transcaucasia, and Bashkiria. The Poles placed particular emphasis on the Crimean Tatars and Cossack detachments, hoping with their help to disintegrate the USSR. Moreover, they planned to create separate states not only on the basis of the union republics of Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, and Armenia, but also on Russian territory. Crimea, Komi, Karelia, and Kuban—all these regions were to gain "independence." Prometheus' émigré organizations established significant connections in Russia and received substantial material and military support from Poland.

How did Soviet security officers combat the followers of "Prometheism"? Who was Colonel Julian Stachiewicz, and what was his role in the creation of Prometheus? How many Polish residencies were there in the USSR, and how did they support local separatists? What service did Prometheus members render to the German Abwehr in 1939? And why are the ideas of "enlightenment" of the peoples of Russia so persistent in Poland? This is the subject of a new film from the documentary series "Riddles of the Century with Sergei Medvedev."
