In this video, we explore the realities of being white in Canadian prisons. Unlike what we see in movies, there aren't race-based gangs lifting weights together, especially in Canadian prisons. Instead, talking to a lifer who had been in jail for 23 years, we learn that the block you're from determines who you hang out with and who you oppose.
The organization doesn't occur among white people, mainly because a lot of them are on methadone and subaxone. The people that work in these institutions come from predominantly white communities, and while the systemic treatment is the same for everyone, the optics are that white people get treated better.
In minimum and medium security, pockets of ethnic groups develop, more so to pool resources like groceries and cooking ethnic food. Some guys don't want their house to smell with fragrant spices, but the Vietnamese guys were all in one house and cooked amazing food.
