A little about lexile scores and how we use it.
Lexile scores a text readability using two parameters – sentence length, and the complexity of words and their frequency. It is another way of assessing a text for a child’s reading ability and sometimes grade level.
I use the scoring system into ways. One is to assess my child reading abilities and encourage books in that grade level. I definitely am not insisting that every book she reads is that a certain lexile score, but I want to make sure that the book she reads contain some of that lexile score and she is being challenged.
I also use the scoring system to help enhance our vocabulary by choosing read aloud or audiobooks that have a greater lexile score than what she is currently reading at.
