Intriga - Saska Lääti 1983 - 2016, released on 24. Oct 2023 by Classic Goa Trax - CGT085
I met Saska the first time when I was about 17 years old, in late 2000. I had just started to make music myself, and I remember how earlier Saska visited our school once to give CD's of his pre-intriga music to some of his friends. We were properly introduced to one another at one of those infamous teenage home-parties where everyone would get wasted in someone's home when the parents were away. I played some of my very first own tunes to Saska and he liked them. A few years passed and I had just got out of the army when I met with Saska somewhere randomly and we remembered our shared passion for electronic music. He invited me to visit him after I asked him if he is still doing music and it's how our friendship started. We continued to play each other our own music, reflect and analyze our tracks with the occasional hash blunt. In the beginning our mixes sounded terrible, and after my first live gig I got really deep in how to mix the tracks sound better in big sound systems and I shared all that I learned with Saska, too.
Saska was a truly unique individual in many ways, he seemed to have an unlimited stream of creativity and I was often amazed how fast he could cook up a track, with all their intricate melodies and details. Sometimes he would make 4-5 tracks per day at best and I had just visited him a few days before and when I came for another visit he would play those and my mind was often blown to bits about the depth they took me. Sometimes he would sit by his computer for days just producing a track after a track. I must have heard at least 200 tracks by him. He truly dedicated himself to it, and described his style as the grunge of goatrance. His main influence was Infected Mushroom, especially their first album 'The Gathering' and many of their lesser-known tracks. He also loved Astral Projection. Another big influence on his sound was the somewhat seminal first album of Talpa, 'The Art of Being Non' from 2004. We used to listen to those often during our music analyzing sessions, during which we also philosophized about the nature of reality too. We always had very interesting conversations with him.
Late 2004 we started our first club together, called 'Tsunami' in a rather bleak location in Eastern Helsinki that was named Fantasy Club. It was very exciting to organise our first own event after visiting and playing in some free forest parties and in some clubs. The event was free and we both played sets there, and it was an amazing success. We held a few more events in that club, and at some point the now very well-known finnish dj-couple Polly & Miazu joined us, which eventually throughout the years lead up to an evolution to first People of the Butterflies and then Kosmos Festival. Sometime after they joined in Saska wanted to continue his own endeavours elsewhere, and found another club in the same area where he continued his own club, which he called Unfair Funfair, somepoint in late 2007. The events continued to be very popular, and Saska would continuously produce more and more music, some of which from that age have been chosen to this tribute release. Years passed and Saska began to distance himself socially but sometimes he would call me and we would continue to discuss deep and philosophical subjects. The last time we spoke was maybe a few days before his death, just before as I was leaving to play music in Hungary and he was happy and told me life was good. We were going to see each other after I came back from the trip, but that obviously never happened.
Saska was a good friend, and an amazing musician. I don't know if I've ever met such an open channel of pure creativity as he was. A truly unique human, completely driven by a purpose until the end.
