The TV licence law in the UK requires that households and businesses must have a TV licence to watch or record live TV broadcasts or use the BBC iPlayer, regardless of the device used. The licence fee funds the BBC, and the standard cost is £159 per year. The law applies to any broadcast service or online streaming where live TV is shown.

Exemptions and discounts are available, such as for those over 75 who receive Pension Credit, people who are blind or severely sight-impaired, and students in specific situations. Failure to pay for a licence can result in fines up to £1,000, along with potential legal action. Enforcement is carried out by TV Licensing, which can investigate and prosecute non-payment.
