Learn how to get Ubuntu Server 22.04.1 LTS running on Apple Silicon using VMware Fusion Tech Preview 22H2. In this video, the hardware being used is a MacBook Pro with the M1 Max processor. There are challenges to getting Ubuntu running on Apple Silicon due to Kernel compatibility. The video walks through the necessary steps to accomplish this. I did not figure this out on my own! Big thanks to the folks in the VMware communities who took the time to put together the Tips and Techniques for the Apple Silicon Tech Preview 22H2 document! See the references section for links to relevant documentation as well as the 20.04.4 Ubuntu ISO that was used during this video.

NOTE: 2 Days after recording, I finally figured out how to get rid of the mouse cursor missing and showing that grey box:
sudo apt install -y adwaita-icon-theme-full

This video will step through the following:
00:00 - Introduction
01:35 - Install VMware Fusion Tech Preview 22H2
03:10 - Create VM for Ubuntu
05:54 - Install Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS ARM64
08:51 - Install mainline command line utility
11:18 - Create pre-upgrade snapshot
11:50 - Upgrade Ubuntu to 22.04.1 LTS
13:54 - Attempt to use mainline to update kernel
14:57 - Find manual kernel update method
16:36 - Download and install 5.19.1 kernel
18:10 - Boot into Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS Server
20:38 - Install tasksel
21:13 - Install Gnome Desktop
22:45 - Fix Fusion Shared Folders
23:49 - Full Screen and Resolution
25:40 - Fix Network Manager with Netplan config update

sh: 1: cd: can’t cd to /root/.cache/mainline/5.19.0
sh: 1: cd: can’t cd to /root/.cache/mainline/5.19.1
sh: 1: cd: can’t cd to /root/.cache/mainline/5.19.2

Enabling HGFS Shared Folders on Fusion or Workstation hosted Linux VMs for open-vm-tools (74650) (vmware.com)

Alternate method to persist HGFS shared folder (shown in video):
Add the following line to the end of /etc/fstab :
vmhgfs-fuse /mnt/hgfs fuse defaults,allow_other 0 0

Then reboot OR run: sudo mount -a
Finally, Create a symbolic link in your home directory:
ln -s /mnt/hgfs ~/host-shared-folders

Since mainline didn’t appear to work from the command line, I had to download the new kernel - only grabbing the headers didn’t work so I then grabbed these files:

wget https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa...
wget https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa...

and installed them as follows:
dpkg -i *.deb
