Here’s how to do it:
Turning your Chevy Silverado On and Off
Try resetting the check engine light by turning your vehicle on and off three times. This method is generally more effective for older models, and newer models may require alternative reset procedures. To reset it this way;
• Start your truck.
• Let it run for at least 1 second.
• Turn it off.
• Let the engine sit silently for 2 – 3 seconds.
• Repeat the entire process for at least 2 more times.
Since this method mostly works on older models, its failure is not necessarily a sign that your vehicle has a serious issue.
Disconnecting your Battery
If turning your vehicle on and off does not reset the check engine light, you can try resetting it by disconnecting your battery. This forces the electronic systems and in-vehicle diagnostics to perform a hard reset. However, disconnecting the battery may not work if the issue causing the check engine light is not resolved. To use this method,
• Park and turn off your vehicle. You should ensure it’s completely off to avoid electrical dangers.
• Put on your safety gear, including gloves and goggles.
• Disconnect the negative terminal of your battery. You can do this by loosening the nut on the terminal using a wrench. The negative terminal typically has a black cap with a minus (-) sign.
• Remove the negative connector from the car battery and keep it disconnected for at least 30 seconds.
• Reconnect the negative terminal and secure it in place with the wrench.
You should not ignore the check engine light when it comes on in your vehicle. A serious issue with your engine could be the cause. It is important to diagnose the cause of the check engine light before attempting a reset.
