An obstruction of the primordial qi, or prenatal obstruction (yuan qi liudong, Yuan Qi Liu Dong) is a congenital disorder or blockage of vital energy that affects a person's overall development. This obstruction is characterized by both a low amount of primordial qi received at birth and insufficient maturation of bodily systems or organs, which creates physical, energetic, and mental obstacles.
It is a significant obstacle to achieving longevity (shou), which in the Daoist tradition is viewed not only in terms of lifespan but also in the context of the ability to manage vital energy, an important condition for progress in practice. If the body is unable to provide itself with the necessary volume and quality of energy due to various reasons (congenital disorders, improper development, old age, or the inability to assimilate energy), then internal changes and transformations cannot be achieved.
