SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It is the process of improving the visibility of a website on search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc). Visibility of the website increases when the position of the website improves in the searches. It means if you are writing a blog or article on any topic, and if a user searches for that topic, your website appears on the search engine results page. The higher the position of the website, the higher the clicks it receives.
Search Engines work in three steps - Crawling, Indexing, and Ranking.
Crawling - When you upload content on your website, the crawlers (bots, spiders, automated software of search engines) comes to your website. They will take the uploaded content from the website to store it on the local server. This is known as crawling.
Indexing - Once the content is placed on the local server, the content is being analyzed to check the topic on which topic it is written on. After analyzing, the content is placed or indexed in its respective topic. For example: If you are writing content on 5 ways to Earn Money Online, your content will be related to online earning. Based on this, the content is being indexed under the Online Money-making topic. Now, if some one searches for this term, the Search engine will look into indexed topics to present the result. This is known as Indexing.
Ranking: After content is indexed when someone searches for a topic, the search engine looks for the indexed topic, and looks for the number of factors (200+) to decide the rankings (keywords, geographical location, user search intent, images used, and many more things). Then it will place the best content on the top position and accordingly other results after it. This is known as Ranking.
That's how Search Engine Works.
