History of Portugal
The history of Portugal is a fascinating one filled with conquests, discoveries, and struggles to reaffirm its identity. At many times, its destiny ran parallel to that of Spain, its Iberian neighbor, but Portugal always sought to maintain a unique character that, even after merging with the Spanish crown for 60 years, emerged stronger, claiming its prominent place in world history.
The history of Portugal as a nation truly begins in the 12th century, when Afonso Henriques proclaimed himself king of Portugal. But first, we must go back a few centuries.
