Pituamkek, also known as the Hog Island Sandhills, refers to a sacred stretch of Islands and sandhills located in Northwestern PEI, home to the Mi’kmaq for over 12,000 years. This area is of great cultural and ecological significance to Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq, making it vital that it’s protected and preserved for generations to come. To have Pituamkek formally recognized as a National Park Reserve is an effort 18 years in the making. Finally, an Agreement between Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq and the Government of Canada regarding Pituamkek National Park Reserve is finalized, and Mi’kmaw expertise, knowledge, and traditional practices will be woven into the planning, management, and operation of the park.
