Types of pruning for semi-tall vines depending on the vine variety
How do you choose the most appropriate type of pruning for semi-high vines depending on the grape variety?
This is the first and most important question that beginners in pruning vines must ask themselves and only then ask themselves how to prune vines. Once the appropriate type of pruning and pruning has been chosen, everything becomes much clearer and simpler.
For vines trained on wire with semi-high stems, there are 3 types of pruning and pruning: with long cords replaced annually or Guyot pruning, in short pegs on perennial wood or Cordon spurred pruning and mixed pruning with fruit bridges formed by pegs and cordites of 4-5 eyes or Cazenave pruning.
There are other methods of cutting and craft management used for tall forms such as arches or pergolas, as well as low forms as were used in old vineyard plantations, but they are not the subject of this presentation...
Therefore, not every type of cutting is suitable for every grape variety. For varieties with reduced growth, with short internode and fertile eyes towards the base of the cord, the spurred cordon is suitable. Usually this type is used for wine varieties. For varieties with vigorous growth, with long internode and fertile eyes towards the top of the cords, the Guyot cut is suitable. Usually this type of cutting is applied to table grape varieties. And for varieties that have fertile eyes towards the middle of the cords, a mixed cut or the Cazenave cut is suitable.
For each of these 3 types of cutting there are some very clear steps that must be followed in the first 4-5 years of vine growth. In each of these years, pruning is practiced in a certain way. If you follow them, you will give the correct shape and it will be very easy to make production cuts in the following years.

Therefore, there is no simple rule for pruning the vine and it is good to avoid advice from people who say that pruning on the vine is generally done in a certain way.
Personally, I have been pruning the vine since I was a kid with my grandfather in his hybrid vine trained on trellises. But in recent years I decided to read specialized books and convert it to wire training and adapt it according to the books I read. And since it's one thing to read in a book and another to see with your own eyes how it's done practically, and I haven't found anything that explains it clearly, I decided to make a series of tutorials for everyone to understand. The goal is for more and more of us to learn how to properly care for our vines.
So everything I present is just how I do it and I recommend that you do it like me only after you have studied other sources and convinced yourself that it's good to do it that way.
