Handling Montessori movable alphabet letters
Before we ask the children to write a single word, we have to show them how to take the letters out of and put them back in the box.
We adults don't even think about the mechanics of taking letters in and out of the box because we have muscle memory for this. But children don't! They don't have mature neural connections between their fingers, their eyes, and their intentions. They need practice to refine those connections.
1. Start by saying the sound of a letter that is special for them, like the first sound in their name or their friends name. You can say “Let’s see if we can find the "m" sound.”
Start scanning through the letters, starting at
the top left and proceeding to the right, row by row until you find it...go slow so that the
child might just beat you to it.
2. Using your index finger and thumb, carefully take the top "m" and place it in front of and just below the bottom left of the box.
3. Encourage the child to find a few more letters, remove them, and place them in front of the box (each in its own space).
Some children may need many days practicing this lesson before moving on to the next one.
4. When its time to clean up you can simply say, “Now I’ll show you how we put each letter back so carefully. “
5. Demonstrate carefully and then give the child a turn with the other sounds.
6. Say, “You’re so careful with these letters! You can take them out and put them back as much as you like.”
7. Guide them to close the box and return it carefully (without tipping) to the shelf. Encourage them to repeat this often with the pink and blue card alphabet and the phonogram card alphabet.
