I wrote Smoke Signals after I finished reading the book, Adrift, which is the incredible story of Steven Callahan's 76-day survival at sea. The mood and metaphors of the song are heavily inspired by his story, but woven within are the personal events and feelings that surrounded finding love, having to leave too soon, and beginning a long-distance relationship.
