Józefa's Letters
English with German Subtitles.
In 2016, a collection of letters written by Polish exile Józefa Bujdo was found in South Wales, UK. In April 1940, Józefa was arrested by the Soviet NKVD and deported from the borderlands of East Poland to Kazakhstan. During her exile Józefa wrote to her children and it’s these letters that would be found more than seventy-five years after the event and five thousand kilometres from their point of origin. An international team of philologists and translators has decoded Józefa’s last communications with her family to reveal an uncensored human account of a mother’s response to the repressive policies of the Soviet totalitarian regime. This short film seeks to unite my own creative expressions with the historical and genealogical research that have allowed for the restoration of Józefa’s identity and the fulfilment of a last wish.
