...Another Leg of the "North-South Expressway" Was Open
A "simple ceremony*" on April 13, 1962 marked the opening of Dade County's new "North-South Expressway" between Northwest 36th and 29th Streets. "The move is expected to solve several rush-hour trouble spots around expressway entrances," read WTVJ's news script for this story.
It was a simpler time, highway-wise, in Miami. The main expressways were the "North-South," now incorporated into I-95, and the "East-West," now the Dolphin Expressway. A "36th Street Expressway," now called the Airport Expressway, was also on the drawing board,
Also part of the plan were two roads that were never built: The "Biscayne Bay Malecon" downtown and the "DIxie Expressway," part of which was eventually built out as another segment of I-95.
