Recovering Wet GoPro Hero 2
My newer GoPro Hero2 got wet! This time, I dove down and came to surface, I realized that the clip of the case popped open and the case was flooded all the way with saltwater. I am not sure how. I may have had kelp tangled around the camera, hit some rocks, or kicked the camera with my fin. Who knows. Anyway, this is my second time getting my Hero 2 wet in saltwater. Luckily I had my camera turned off. I immediately existed out of water and removed the battery and the SD card. And then, I rinsed the camera and the back pack thoroughly with a bottle of freshwater.
I came home and prepared some filtered freshwater. I dunked the camera and the back pack into the water for 20-30seconds. After that I took them out of water and shook really hard to remove water inside the camera and the backpack. First I tried with a bag of rice to dry them out, but I later saw some moisture inside the bag. When I took a look at it closely, it looked like the moisture was actually coming from the rice!
I realized our place in California is dryer than rice. I switched to "Inside Car in Sunny Day" method. I left the camera and the backpack inside my car parked outside for 24 hours. That worked out really well. GoPro can withstand 140f degree, and I know it gets hotter than 140f when recording n 60fps with LCD backpack, so I was confident that heat would not break the camera.
After all, the only thing that did not work was the battery. That is great! Everything else worked just like before. I thought I would lose another Hero2. That was a huge relief.
