Windows 98 is the fifth and last major version of Windows , the operating system family produced by Microsoft, rising on MS-DOS and the second major version of the Windows 9x series. Microsoft added multimedia and internet services to this version. Windows 98 was ready for production on May 15, 1998 and released on June 25, 1998. Windows 98 was previously known by the code names Memphis and Windows 97. Like its predecessor Windows 95 , Windows 98 is an operating system that works as a 16-bit / 32-bit hybrid and whose opening style is based on MS-DOS. It is the first Windows operating system to comply with the Windows Driver Model model. In addition, Windows 98 is the last Windows operating system that can be installed with floppy disks . The RTM build number is 1998.6.
