How to: Vocoder Robot Voices and Arpeggios like Midnight Star's Freak-A-Zoid
Hooking up a vocoder in your DAW can be tricky. Here's a tutorial showing how to do it in Propellerheads Reason (works pretty much the same in other DAWs) to produce classic robot voices. This demonstration uses the free TAL vocoder plugin. The video also covers how to use an arpeggiator (the RPG-8 in this demo) to get the energetic song-filling effect like Midnight Star's Freak-A-Zoid. These are synthesizer staples of 80's funk and dance music.
