6 - The Butterfly - Puberulous Stellar Tomb
Unlike the comparatively mundane nature of interplanetary space, the stellar sea which exists beyond the planets has never been explored save for two spacecraft which have only recently entered this alien domain. These two have only dipped their toes into the waters of a vast ocean. Interstellar space stretches for nearly a quintillion miles of which these two have traveled a mere three billion, a proportion similar to the breadth of Asia as compared to the width of a pin.
Here, the Sun is one of hundreds of billions of stars, it holds no precedent, a pinprick dotted onto the blackness. As one ventures forth, entire volumes of stars vanish and give way to a dim, volute mist, presenting us with the largest structure of the ancient mind : The Milky Way.
It is no wonder the Ancients conceived of a sphere of immovable points of light existing far beyond those “wanderers” thought of as gods. The timescales on which these points of light move and interact spirals into infinity from human perspective. Numerous religions and faiths have pasted their deities into the stars as a symbol of that which lasts forever.
Despite this pairing of the Divine with the relative permanence of Bronze Age astronomical findings, the space here is just as fluid and dynamic as any part of the universe, not operating on the scale of hundreds of years, but millions. The sidaereal realm of this whining, harmonic album presents the listener with the unimaginable distances separating these minuscule stellar candles. These soundscapes and tonalities simultaneously operate as a barrier, a shield from the greatest lacunae of this Cosmos : the voids between galaxies…
This is Archaeosophos’ second album. As hinted in the prologue to Periphery (2020), a new album of a different, vaster kin was called upon. Like the previous, this album is best enjoyed with headphones. Whereas Periphery (2020) emphasized the vastness of space, a more philosophical goal is taken for this album : emphasizing futility of human conceptions of meaning in the midst of immensity unmatched. Undoubtedly a drone album, this collection of songs features ambience as well as some shallow orchestration for strings, winds and keyboard employing Brucknerian and Bachian harmonies.
