Synopsis:
John the Baptist, born at the end of the 1st century BC in Judea, is considered a prophet and forerunner of Jesus of Nazareth. Having come from the desert, traveling along the shores of the Dead Sea and up the banks of the Jordan River, John visited many places in Judea, where he encouraged people to cultivate virtue and practice justice, baptizing many who came to hear him, as a symbol of their purification. According to the historian Flavius Josephus, he was beheaded by order of King Herod Antipas, who feared that “John would persuade the people to start a revolt.” John and Jesus were second cousins, since Mary, the mother of Jesus, and Elizabeth, the mother of John, were first cousins. The canonical Gospels recount that Jesus arrived at the banks of the Jordan River from Galilee, and there asked his cousin John to baptize him. The Baptism of Jesus is an episode in the life of Jesus of Nazareth that is recounted in the New Testament, and with it begins his public ministry.
Some historians maintain that Jesus and John were prepared for their mission by the Essenes, a secret brotherhood founded in the time of Moses. The Essenes lived discreetly, hidden in caves in the mountains of Palestine, as guardians of ancestral knowledge that human selfishness sought to destroy.
Some believe that the mission of Jesus and John aimed to reveal the truth about the nature, origin, and destiny of humankind and about the meaning of its existence.
Although there are many writings about the public life of Jesus, little is known about what John said and did. According to the Gospels, John the Baptist defined himself as "The voice crying in the wilderness." To date, this is the only existing biographical film about John the Baptist.
