Undisciplining II plenary session with Professor Bridget Fowler, Professor Andrew Smith, Dr Alison Eldridge and Professor Les Back
In this session Bridget Fowler and Les Back reflected critically on what it means to approach sociology as practice, and on its dilemmas and possibilities. How do we profess vocational commitment in the present moment in ways that acknowledge – rather than erase – the messy relationship between the personal and the political, lived experience and theoretical analysis? How do scholars honour intellectual debts to those who have shaped their sociological imagination while also grappling with the often exclusionary ways in which sociology has been, and in many ways continues to be, constituted? Organised to mark the publication of the new Sociological Review monograph Revisiting Culture and Society: Essays in Honour of Bridget Fowler, the session began with a showing of the short film Mum’s Cards by the Turner Prize-nominated artist Luke Fowler. The conversation was followed by questions and wider discussion.
