No doubt the elephant in the room is, you guessed it, the FUGAZI SHUT THE DOOR video, which at 653,312 views after its upload eight years ago is still the biggest accident to happen in my life. Still to this day, fresh, extreme, and raw, because, well, maybe you're like me and you've watched it a million times with a magnifying glass & fine-tooth comb to figure out WHY it kicks so much ass. Words cannot describe how kick-ass it is, so I will offer a simple prayer instead. Om Shanti Om. Rock & Roll Will Never Die.
YouTube estimates an average 320 views per day. Lo and behold, I started writing this a couple hours ago and it's already jumped +178 views to 653,490, like, what's going on here?
For however many years, every so often I get a Fugazi comment sent to my cellphone and it makes my day, mostly because it's all positive comments.
Let's set the record straight, I'm not a hardcore Fugazi fan, nor have I ever seen them live. Sacrilegious, I know. I'm aware of that. Back in the late '90s, I a 20-year-old DJ at a college radio show I called "Solid Kryptonite" 103.3 FM WPRB once a week 7pm-9pm. Prime time deal, indie stacks, obscure vinyl, plus the then revolutionary "Compact Disc." Rushing frantically to put together a decent show, I still have recurring nightmares about getting lost and messing up live on air. Fugazi's "Oh" really struck a chord and I played the hell out of it, not really caring if I overplayed it.
No one complained about overplaying Fugazi's "Oh" but there was one complaint I'll never forget which was rather funny. A listener calls in, "Do you really have to play CHAVEZ TIGHT AROUND THE JAWS ... AGAIN?" I was quite young at the time, and I think I played that track MORE just out of spite. "Tight Around the Jaws" I have to admit can be overplayed a teeny bit, although I wouldn't call slathering your cake overdoing it. To each his own, I guess.
One last story about my radio show. Girl calls in. "I wanted to say I love your show." Click. Coolest thing ever to happen to me, succinct and to the point, similar to a YouTube viewer who twice commented she's obsessed with this Fugazi video and listens to it constantly. That builds within me a certain elation, because, well, I feel exactly the same way. Probably no one remembers it, but back in 2010 one of the first Fugazi comments was from a female viewer. "I watch this video every day." Male viewers are cool, too, don't get me wrong.
Anyway, around the year 2001 after all was said and done, I tape recorded the last Solid Kryptonite radio show and packed it in, put that chapter of my life to rest, and around the same time purchased the Fugazi Instrument DVD from a local store. That's what you see here on YouTube, my personal retail NTSC anti-aliased DVD from around 2001 or 2002. My friends and I previewed it on a home theater system and right there I thought, "This video must be shared."
Now, is this particular SHUT THE DOOR superior to others? I'm not saying whether it is or isn't, but I've always wondered why it gets so many hits. After all, I'm just the uploader, never thought in a million years it would exceed 653,312 views. Well, here we are, and here are a few arguments for the court to examine.
For starters, it's direct audio from the DVD. For the life of me, I can't remember how I encoded the video but I'm pretty sure I had the presence of mind to retain the 48kHz sample rate and whatnot. That's certainly one factor, it's direct from the retail DVD. Second factor, although it's not HD bluray, it still looks pretty damn good resolution-wise, weighing in at a measly 4:3 aspect ratio 480p boosted to the highest bit rate I could manage. Sometimes with uploaders it's a hit-or-miss deal, frame rate out of whack resulting in a ghosting effect, audio down-sampled from 48kHz to 44kHz or worse, incorrect aspect ratio. Boo! Thumbs down.
I strongly believe I lucked out in the encoding process.
Third and probably most important, I made sure to eliminate the intro so that it jumps straight into the performance. I'm fickle myself, so any lengthy intro would've lost me in the first couple seconds.
